A Biographical Sketch

Dr. Gajendra Singh is a distinguished Emeritus Professor of Anatomy at the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. Born to Sardar Sohan Singh and Mrs. Kartar Kaur on November 1, 1947, he belongs to a village in Hoshiyarpur district of Punjab, India. He spent his early childhood in Chunar (Mirzapur) and Mokamaghat (Patna) where his elementary education started in village schools. The early education of Dr. Singh was disturbed as his father being in Indian Railways was getting transferred more or less every two years.

Dr. Singh attended Janta Higher Secondary School, Lucknow and Saraswati Vidyalaya Inter College Bareilly, where he completed his secondary School.  He completed his intermediate from St. Andrew’s College in Gorakhpur, UP which left a deep impression on his life. He then proceeded to Gorakhpur University where he received a Bachelor’s Degree. He was not only a very hard working student but fortunate also to get selected in ML Medical College, Allahabad and also K.G. Medical College Lucknow for MBBS course with good positions. He preferred KGMC and completed his MBBS (with Internship) in 1970.

Dr. Singh’s first formal teaching assignment was as a Demonstrator (Anatomy) at the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University in 1971. While teaching anatomy, he pursued and completed his M.S. in Anatomy from Banaras Hindu University in 1974. He has spent more than forty two years imparting acquired knowledge to students, and rose in position from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer to Associate Professor and to Professor, Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Director, Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University.

His contribution to the University was remarkable having served on numerous Boards, Committees, and Schemes. During these forty years, Dr. Singh travelled as a Visiting Senior lecturer in Anatomy to College of Medical Sciences, University of Benin (Nigeria), presented research papers at various Symposiums and Conferences in various parts of the world. Dr. Singh has more than 110 publications in reputed international journals to his credit.

A track record of profound knowledge and strong professional credentials led him to several important appointments. A gentleman in the best sense of the word, with a broad view of life and an inner wisdom, Dr. Singh served Banaras Hindu University in various capacities e.g., Chief Proctor, BHU, Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Director, Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU, (Twice), Senior most professor of the university, Member, BHU court, Director, Grievances (appointed by Ministry of HRD) and many more. Professor Singh was appointed the Vice Chancellor of Guru Ghasidas University, Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh which he did not join and continued serving BHU in order to fulfill certain commitments. He has various fellowships and honors to his credit.

Dr. Singh married Hardeep Kaur in 1978. Ever since then she has been a powerful adjunct and support to her husband. Mrs. Singh, the significant better half of Dr. Singh, is an impeccable exemplar of a flawless homemaker. Though highly educated, Mrs Singh preferred to be a house wife for the better upbringing of their two children, a daughter and a son. With her elegant and graceful persona, Mrs. Singh has always managed the Dr. Singh's household very elegantly while he was busy shaping his career.

Dr. Tina Singh daughter of the couple is elder and has done MBBS and Post-Graduation in Obst. & Gynecology from AFMC Pune.  She is a regular Navy Officer (Lt. Commander). Dr. Singh’s son is younger and has done M.Tech from IIT Kanpur. Presently he is doing his MBA from IIM, Bangalore. Both Tina and Amandeep had been very brilliant students in their studies which they started from St. John’s School, Varanasi.

As evident by his wide collection of books and music, Dr. Singh is an enthusiastic music and booklover. Genuine affection, personal warmth and deep concern for others, a genuine sense of fairness, and his belief that ‘Trust a few and do harm to none’ led him a successful life.
